Researchers with Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce are asking local anglers to lend a helping hand when it comes to monitoring inventory and fish quality in the Indian River Lagoon.
From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, FAU Harbor Branch scientists ask anglers and their families to come join them to complete a science-based fishing outing. At Pepper Park Riverside, Wildcat Cove Pier No. 2, anglers can learn about DNAngler, a new citizen science project at FAU Harbor Branch.
Anglers will be asked to fish for at least one hour, fill out a data sheet and then collect a water sample. All research materials will be provided, but participants must bring their own fishing equipment.
To add incentive to the information collection, citizen scientists at the event will have the chance to win raffle prizes. As an added bonus, they also could catch some cool fish like redfish, trout, flounder, jacks, sheepshead, snook or more.
