So our letter-writing campaign to Gov. Rick Scott is winding down, and in the next week or so we’re looking at getting the missives — which beseech Scott to use the power of his position to push for more water storage south of Lake Okeechobee — up to Tallahassee.
The initial idea was to deliver them to Scott in person, and at first it looked like his office might play ball. Except there was always a hitch. The Governor doesn’t have any availability that day. The Governor is going to be out of town then. We’ll let you know when he might be available.
My last few emails to his press secretary were completely ignored. So let’s just say we’re not expecting much.
Still, the campaign generated some 14,000 responses — around 10,000 online and another 4,000 signatures either collected at the “Buy the Land” rally on Stuart Beach July 2, or via letters clipped from the paper and mailed to us.
If you like, there’s still time to add your name to the chorus at TCPalm.com/govletter.
We could just stick all the letters in the mail — but that would be kind of anticlimactic, wouldn’t it? After all, the goal of the campaign wasn’t merely to make a statement. It was an attempt to make a difference.
So we’ll physically take them to Tallahassee. I’d love to stride into the Governor’s office with a big, algae green-colored mailbag filled with your letters, and set it on the floor with a theatrical THUMP: The Treasure Coast checks in!
