Disappointed Floridian

Dear Governor Scott,

I'm a confused and, frankly, angry voter. All my friends, my neighbors and even elected federal officials are crazed by the muck in our water. So, please tell me why you are ignoring our algae bloom crisis..

How can you leave us here on the Treasure Coast knee deep in pollution? You declared a State of Emergency and then disappeared. We're stuck here with water we can't go near, air that makes us gag and beaches that are closed. Our local businesses are in danger and our tourism numbers are dropping just like our property values.

To my knowledge, you have not even come here to inspect the disaster you declared. Is this just another version of the absentee landlord? Are you so busy traveling around the world that you can't stop to save your own citizens from disaster?

You're out supporting a new passenger rail system. But if you continue to ignore our crisis, you won't have any tourists to ride them. They'll all go somewhere else.

You've always been a decisive problem-solver. Now you're running away from a disaster when like a good firefighter you should be running toward one. Step up to the algae bloom crisis. With no federal help, you're our best hope. Be a hero and solve this problem. I can vote for a fighter, but not for a Governor who abandons his people.

Where Are You?

Dear Governor Scott,

Please tell me why almost every elected official except you has come to the Treasure Coast to express outrage? You've only declared a State of Emergency long distance.

Both of our U.S. Senators have seen and smelled our algae bloom disaster first hand. State and local officials by the carload have visited our waterfronts and spoken openly about the need to address this situation.

Most officials recognize the severity of the problem. And, they know a simple fix won't do it. This algae bloom problem was with us in 2013. Now it's back again. We need to solve this problem, not just fix it.

Governor, this is not a political issue. It's a health issue. And, it's rapidly becoming a statewide issue. Thanks to the media, the whole country knows about our plight. If you have national ambitions, surely you don't want to be known as the man who ruined Florida because of failing to act on the algae bloom crisis.

If this disaster continues you may well destroy everything you stand for. What tourists will want to come to a state with polluted waters? What working people will want to take a job in a state mired in muck? People may be attracted by falling home prices, but will they actually buy if their backyard smells like a cesspool?

With Federal help having been denied, you're the one person we can turn to. You're the guy who has to step up. Get rid of our algae bloom now. Stop discharging pollution into our waterways. And, lead us to a permanent solution.

You've got the authority and the money in Amendment 1 to do it. All you need is the will to send the water south. Challenge the sugar industry to join forces with people across the state in making a better life for our children and grandchildren. Make our water clean for good.

Water

Dear Governor Scott,

The state of Florida is in a pivotal time of its existence. Even as we are making a huge leap toward the future in population growth, we are in danger of plummeting. The elevator is rising rapidly, but the floor is about to drop out.

At the crux of this conundrum is water. Water. We drink it, play in it, sail on it and bathe in it. Water is one thing we can't live without. As long as it's clean.

But, today on the Treasure Coast water is anything but clean. It's full of fish-killing, health-threatening, odoriferous, algae-laden muck. People can't live on it and they can't live with it.

And, you're sitting in Tallahassee fiddling while Stuart sinks. This is your state and we're your constituents, but you behave like you could care less. All the other politicians have at least come here to at least simulate support. You've made one declaration and vanished.

If you want our votes when you next run for office, you better step up and be counted. We need a real solution to this pollution problem. And, you're the only guy who can do it.

You have the authority to redirect the water south. This will prevent further pollution here and, at the same time, create a new fresh water source for our southern most counties.

You have the money available from Amendment 1 to buy the land necessary to store water south of Lake O. You just need to spend these funds as they were intended by the voters not to cover on-going costs as currently planned.

What you need is some of that feisty, tensile tough Scott backbone that always seems to be missing when it comes to decisions on water. Funny how the will disappears when what's at stake is one of our most valuable natural resources.

Make the right decision for Florida. And, save us from drowning in muck in the process. Do the right thing even if it's hard.
