The Steering Committee for the Loxa-Lucie Headwaters Initiative is pleased to announce receipt of an endorsement letter from Waste Management.
With their regional headquarters being located on Bridge Rd., Waste Management's local administrative staff and employees regularly travel through the heart of the Loxa-Lucie's project area. The project's goal of protecting environmentally sensitive areas and restoring hydrological connections is in direct alignment with Waste Management's Environmental Policy.
"Having previously received letters of support from various local governments, environmental NGOs and community groups, it is great to have our first corporate endorsement" said Greg Braun, chair of the Loxa-Lucie Headwaters Initiative.
The group, which is a consortium of three non-profit organizations (the Guardians of Martin County, the Treasured Lands Foundation and The Conservation Fund) was formed to acquire and conserve privately-owned parcels from willing sellers in the corridor between Jonathan Dickinson State Park and Atlantic Ridge Preserve State Park. With tax-deductible donations from throughout the community, the consortium has acquired three strategically-located and hydrologically-important tracts totaling approximately 180 acres.
Projects are underway to address populations of invasive, non-native flora and fauna on the properties, with long-terms goals of working with Martin County and other governmental organizations to reverse problems of saltwater intrusion and degraded water quality in both the Loxahatchee and St. Lucie River Estuaries.
