Lake Okeechobee discharges to St. Lucie River will stop for nine days, then resume

Lake Okeechobee discharges to the St. Lucie River will be reduced starting Friday, with a complete stop for nine consecutive days, then resume in pulses indefinitely.

The new 14-day average will be 315 million gallons a day instead of the current 1.2 billion gallons per day, with zero discharges from Saturday through July 8.

Discharges will be done in pulses on these dates (in millions of gallons per day):

June 29: 756
July 9: 820
July 10: 1,293
July 11: 1,357
July 12: 1,066

Mark Perry, executive director of Florida Oceanographic Society in Stuart says he is encouraged by this decision.
