The Kilroys are coming back to monitor water quality in Indian River County, thanks to grants in 2019 and 2020 from the Florida Legislature.
The Ocean Research & Conservation Association’s (ORCA) remote-controlled monitors allow scientists and community members to monitor water quality data in real time. The information is used to identify and remedy pollution sources in the Indian River Lagoon and its tributaries.
The Kilroys measure water-quality indicators such as blue-green algae and the nitrates and phosphates that feed the blooms. They also measure temperature, depth, clarity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll and acidity.
