TCPALM Editorial: The scoop on changes within the Indian River Lagoon Nat’l Estuary Program

By Laurence Reisman: I was puzzled when I learned the Indian River County Commission had pulled out of the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program. Commissioners, after all, have been committed to restoring the ailing lagoon.

The back story is intriguing. And despite the fact the lagoon, 156 miles of the most biologically diverse estuary in North America, traverses six Florida counties, two Vero Beach men are smack dab in the middle of what has become a regional controversy.

County Commissioner Bob Solari, a former citrus grower, and Doug Bournique, executive vice president of the Indian River Citrus League and member of the St. Johns River Water Management District governing board, have known each other for decades.
