STUART — The safety dangers All Aboard Florida poses to the city’s maritime industry are unacceptable, according to the city commission.
Stuart on Monday unanimously approved a resolution condemning those public safety dangers. It joins Martin County, the town of Jupiter Island and Tequesta, as well as other governments along the Treasure Coast, in speaking out against the proposed high speed rail.
The commission said it plans to pass a second, more general resolution denouncing All Aboard Florida for the myriad environmental, financial and lifestyle problems it could cause on the Treasure Coast.
Commissioners broached the idea of a second resolution following a statement from Stuart City Commission candidate Robin Hicks-Connors, who spoke during a public comment period.
“Absolutely nothing good can come of (All Aboard Florida). You need stronger language,” said Hicks-Connors, who was one of seven members of the public who testified Monday.
City staff, in the new resolution, say All Aboard Florida’s proposed 32 daily trips along the Treasure Coast would force frequent closures of the trestle bridge crossing the St. Lucie River/Okeechobee Waterway. These closures could negatively affect the marine industry, city officials said.
