Martin County was well represented at the 29th Annual Everglades Coalition Conference. The Conference was held January 9th-11th, 2014 in Naples, Florida. The theme for this year’s meeting was “Everglades Restoration: Protecting Coastal Communities.” Florida Oceanographic Society Executive Director Mark Perry spoke with “The Guardians” recently and says this past coalition was among the top ten in terms of impact.
Jensen Beach High School Environmental Teacher Crystal Lucas (mentioned in Mr. Perry’s interview to the left) is also the co-founder of a youth driven film festival, sponsored in part by,”The Guardians of Martin County.” Read the story here.
This year’s conference follows a summer of toxic blooms and bacteria in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River due to discharges from Lake Okeechobee. Although this is a complex issue, Mr. Perry tells us that finding a way to send the water south must be the first hurdle to cross. Listen to his comments by clicking the “YouTube” video to the right.
