Blue-green algae in St. Lucie River targeted by DEP; Martin County looking at 2 options

The state is offering $3 million to local governments to clean up the toxic algae bloom.
Martin County is looking to use some of the money to suck or blow blue-green algae out of the St. Lucie River.
The money is for “containment, removal, cleanup, elimination, transportation and disposal” of blooms in areas such as public and private marinas, boat ramps and other public access areas, according to a Florida Department of Environmental Protection news release.
Martin, St. Lucie, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Okeechobee and Palm Beach counties can apply for the grants under Gov. Rick Scott’s state-of-emergency declaration because of the Lake O-related blooms. Municipal governments have to submit proposals to the county governments.
Martin County is looking at two possible grants: one for a way to keep algae out of closed areas like canals and marinas, and another to suck it out.
