From WPTV & The Palm Beach Post:
A local state of emergency has been declared in Martin County over its dire water conditions caused by fresh-water discharges from Lake Okeechobee.
County commissioners met during an emergency meeting on Tuesday (August 7, 2018) to vote on the declaration.
The state of emergency is in place for seven days and allows the county to fast-track the process of issuing and signing contracts needed to clean up the toxic algae.
County spokeswoman Martha Ann Kneiss said that the county hasn’t been able to move forward with mitigation efforts until acquiring the grants and approval from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. This act will speed up that process.
