It is with heavy hearts that we share this sad news that our long-serving Secretary and Treasurer, George MacLean, recently passed away following an accident in his home.

While George was long-retired from a career overseas with IBM, he continued to devote countless hours and expertise to organizations throughout Martin County. We are very grateful for the many years he devoted to our cause.

His interest in our local water quality issues began when George owned a boat and noticed the problems first-hand as he was navigating in and out of the St. Lucie Inlet.

Educating the public about Martin County’s beauty was very important to George. He recognized that many people moving to the area had not seen a sunrise or sunset on the beaches and had never been out west to see the open lands.  Sharing these images through video and photos was one of his favorite projects.

In addition to the Guardians, George’s caring nature was truly reflected in the many community boards on which he chose to serve, including the YMCA of the Treasure Coast and Mary’s Shelter of the Treasure Coast. In addition, he was active with St. Joseph Catholic Church & School in Stuart.

George was known for his excellent listening skills, which resulted in a calm, thoughtful approach to the many difficult issues and challenges that came before the organization.  And he also had a lighter side. George was quick with a joke, a smile, and always a team player.

All who knew George also remember how much he enjoyed the challenge of a good game of golf. George also served two terms as President of the Board at Willoughby, where he lived with his wife, Joan.

His contributions to the Guardians will have a lasting impact on our mission, our people, and Martin County residents. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

George, Rest In Peace.
