Land Donation Expands Martin County Nature Preserve

The Kiplinger Nature Reserve, a popular place for hikers and bridge walkers on Kanner Highway, just grew from 150 to 157-acres.  In a press release on August 6th, the Kiplinger family of Washington D.C. and Sewall’s Point, announced the donation of the 7-acre tract of land (in red on the map below) located between the Veterans Memorial Bridge and the existing Kiplinger Nature Preserve.

Mr. Kiplinger says, “It’s a valuable corner zoned for a variety of commercial/residential uses, but our family believes it should be left open forever, for the benefit of the people of Martin County.”

The property consists of more than two acres of dry upland, with mature slash pines and

saw palmetto, sloping down to five acres of wetlands and mangroves on the St. Lucie River. It includes a small, unnamed creek that flows into the river.  Mr. Kiplinger has joked that maybe he should name it “Knight’s Creek.”

Martin County Commissioner Sarah Heard says she is both pleased and grateful that the land has been donated to the County.  More details were not available since the donation was just recently announced.

The Guardians of Martin County sincerely thank the Kiplinger family for this generous gift that will be cherished in perpetuity for the enjoyment of everyone in Martin County.  That’s living responsibly.
