It’s World Ocean Day!

What is World Ocean Day?

The purpose of the Day is to share information about the impact of human actions on the ocean and to develop a worldwide movement for the sustainable management of the ocean.

In celebration, The Guardians of Martin County is pleased to continue its engagement with a variety of local entities whose mission is to preserve and protect the waters that feed into our nearshore Atlantic Ocean.

Our position as one of more than 100 organizations that are members of The Rivers Coalition, helps show a united front on issues that affect the St. Lucie River Estuary and Indian River Lagoon.

Similarly, our involvement on an advisory committee to the Indian River Lagoon’s National Estuary Program, helps the Guardians advocate for actions that address the water quality problems that are becoming increasingly apparent.

A grade of “F+” on a Lagoon Report Card, recently published by the Marine Resources Council of East Florida, clearly shows the need to focus on water quality, if we are going to protect the nearshore Atlantic Ocean waters.
On a global scale, we are also taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. The United Nations says 90% of the big fish populations have been depleted and 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed.

To protect and preserve the ocean and all it sustains, we must create a new balance.
