Help Save Our Wildlife & Increase Driver Safety

Since the first of this year, the deaths of over 190 animals have been recorded during surveys of wildlife mortality on Bridge Road in

Roseate Spoonbill

Hobe Sound.  The animals were killed by vehicles between US 1 and I-95. The Guardians believe actions can be taken to reduce the number of fatalities.

The Survey
Specimens encountered have included a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.  Documentation of the deaths is being conducted in a consistent & scientific manner twice a week with funding provided by the Pegasus Foundation. As more data is compiled and interactions continue with Martin County, (the County owns & maintains the road), The Guardians hope that corrective actions will be taken to reduce wildlife mortality and improve driver safety.  For example, one measure could be to install directional or exclusionary fencing.

How You Can Help
Funding for the Wildlife Mortality Study will end on August 31, 2020.  You can help extend these surveys through the end of the year by making a tax-deductible donation to the Pegasus Foundation.

The Guardians believe that showing the results of a full-year of documentation will take into account seasonal fluctuations in mortality and have a stronger impact on decision-makers.
