Ginny & Howard’s Blog: Victory for Martin County’s Comp Plan

The Martin County Commission voted 3-2 today to adopt the amendment to Chapters 4 and 10 of our Comprehensive Plan that restores some of the provisions that were eliminated by the Future Group re-write in 2009 and strengthens protections for our river and estuary.

Commissioners Doug Smith and John Haddox opposed the amendment.

Commissioners Sarah Heard, Ed Fielding and Anne Scott were strong supporters, as were most members of the public who urged the commission to adopt the amendment.

The Guardians’ Greg Braun, Marge Ketter from the Rivers Edge Community, Donna Melzer of the Martin County Conservation Alliance, marine science educator Crystal Lucas, Myra Galoci, Regina Wood, Jackie Trancynger and many other residents made excellent comments and presented intelligent and articulate arguments in support of the amendment.

The hard work, dedication, and brilliance of Maggy Hurchalla were evident in the amendment, which was well-packaged, presented and defended by staff, including Samantha Lovelady and Nicki van Vonno, with an assist from John Polley.

Martin County residents can be proud of our continuing commitment to our environment and a quality of life that is unequaled in South Florida.

Thank you, Maggy.

Thank you, County Staff.

Thank you, Commissioners Heard, Fielding and Scott.

Thank you, citizens of Martin County for unwavering devotion to the Martin County Difference.
