parks, known as the Loxa-Lucie Headwaters Initiative, is moving forward after a contract to secure 138 acres was signed in mid-July, said Matt Sexton of the Conservation Fund — one of three environment nonprofits spearheading the effort.

The Hobe Sound Concerned Citizens Coalition posted Sept. 8 the update on the land that runs along a 2-mile tract on the north side of Southeast Bridge Road.

The $3.5 million parcel is the first phase of connecting the sources of the Loxahatchee River and St. Lucie River, which would restore historical waterflows, enhance water quality and protect vegetation and wildlife from development, according to the initiative.

Loxa-Lucie Map The sale of the parcel is expected to close next month, Sexton said. About 10,000 acres are left in the project area to create the contiguous 70,000-acre link.

“Our committee has identified that (parcel) as a key and a first step in our overall program because of its unique hydrologic location, where there’s water flowing underneath Bridge Road and into Kitching Creek and the Loxahatchee,” said Greg Braun, Executive Director of The Guardians of Martin County.

The initiative has received support from local governments such as Martin County and the town of Jupiter Island. The project is listed among the county’s legislative priorities for 2022.
