Federal help for sugar industry shows no sign of drying up

Republican U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young and Democrat U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy are the only congressmen in Florida who have not accepted campaign funding from Big Sugar. We need to keep the pressure on all of our politicians to acknowledge what Big Sugar discharges are doing to our estuary and to help us stop the pollution of our waterways.

How much have our other politicians received?

SUGAR CONTRIBUTIONS

All but two members of Florida’s congressional delegation have accepted money from the sugar industry since 2007. The 25 U.S. House members have accepted a combined $753,000 from sugar groups since 2007. Florida’s two senators have taken $111,200 combined over that time frame.

Here is a look at sugar’s donations to the Treasure Coast’s lawmakers since 2007:

U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter: $0

U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge: $29,500

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D: $77,300

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R: $33,900
