Everglades Defense Fund

Fifty-six years ago, Marjory Stoneman Douglas founded Friends of the Everglades as a grassroots effort to preserve and protect the world's sole everglades ecosystem.  Guardians Executive Director Greg Braun had the great pleasure of meeting and hosting the legendary Marjory Stoneman Douglas when she came to Martin County in the mid 1980's.
Having stopped the proposed jetport once, neither she, nor anyone one else could have predicted the new and different use for that property that has recently arisen so many decades later.  While the Guardians of Martin County's efforts continue to focus on threats closer to home, we appreciate that the Friends of the Everglades has gone to court to protect these lands and wetlands that are valuable for so many reasons.
The Friends of the Everglades have recently created the Everglades Defense Fund, with a goal of raising $2M over the next 12 months to be used in the legal effort that includes the Center for Biological Diversity, Earthjustice and other conservation colleagues.
