Editorial: Less oversight, more trouble? Support for keeping DRI designations

Imagine living in a county that prides itself on resisting most new large-scale development — as hundreds of thousands of Treasure Coast residents do.

And imagine a neighboring municipality is considering a 4,000-unit housing development close to the county line. Inevitably, county No. 1’s water supply, roads, environment and overall quality of life could suffer, even as the construction actually occurs in a different county.

The impact of growth isn’t confined by arbitrary local government boundaries.

That’s why large-scale developments — those comprising more than 1,000 homes, for instance — are identified as having regional impact, and why planning authorities for the past 40 years have used the Developments of Regional Impact (DRI) mechanism to decide on the greater good of such mega-developments.
