The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has finalized a plan for completing rehabilitation work on the Herbert Hoover Dike around Lake Okeechobee.
Despite spending more than $870 million on strengthening the dike since 2001, corps officials say the lake can’t hold more water — which would help reduce the need for harmful discharges to the St. Lucie River — until work on the south side of the dike is completed, which is scheduled in 2025.
“Completion of rehabilitation doesn’t necessarily enable additional capacity to hold water in the lake,” said Col. Jason Kirk, the corps commander for Florida, but it should give “some additional flexibility in our operations.”
