TCPalm Trending: Weather Channel captures our filth on film

The Weather Channel thinks we’re disgusting.

And that might be a good thing.

Last week a mini-documentary produced by the network was making the rounds on social media. “Toxic Lake” told the story of our “Green ’16,” how this past summer was lost to the toxic algae blooms that killed fish and businesses, sickened residents and drove tourists away.

 
We hope.

The title of the film was a bit of a misnomer: Yes, Lake Okeechobee was the prime source of the blue-green algae that choked our waters last summer, but that doesn’t mean the lake itself, on the whole, is “toxic.” Critics, of course, seized on this in an attempt to discredit the ultimate message of the film.

Nonetheless, Weather Channel correspondent Kait Parker did a good job encapsulating the algae’s effect on our region, interviewing key activists and providing a comprehensive overview of the problem.
