Over 11,000 people have signed an online petition demanding that Governor Scott stop Lake Okeechobee discharges into the Indian River Lagoon. The petition also calls for the government buyback of the 700,000-acre Everglades Agricultural Area, where Lake Okeechobee runoff historically flowed but is now being blocked by sugar farming interests. Jensen Beach resident Steven Cottrell started the petition under the name, “River of Light.” It has received the endorsement of many local environmental organizations including the Indian Riverkeeper, Rivers Coalition and Florida Oceanographic Society.
