Letter to Governor Scott: Can You Smell It Now?

Algae bloom toxicity levels are now extreme on the Treasure Coast. Sea creatures are dying. Residents have trouble breathing. Beaches and businesses are closing. The muck must be stopped now. And, the muck must be stopped for good.

Where Are You, Governor?
Politicians have come here in numbers to see and smell our polluted waterways in person. You declared a state of emergency from long distance and then vanished. The world may be okay in Tallahassee, but here it stinks. Come smell for yourself.

Muck Is Contagious
Thanks to the media, the algae bloom has become a national event. This will discourage tourists, job seekers and retirees from coming to Florida. Your often stated goals of revenue and job growth may well be destroyed by the state’s own water policy.

Water Fix vs. Water Solution
Halting Lake O discharges may fix the problem temporarily. But, a “water fix” won’t last. What’s needed is a “water solution”. We have to agree on the real cause of the algae bloom. We have to identify and execute solutions that ensure clean water for everybody in the future. We must stop the muck, but we must also develop fresh water sources for densely populated areas like Miami/Dade County to avoid a fundamental water crisis.

A Blueprint Already Exists
The good news is most studies agree that whatever else is done, water flowing from the north must flow and be stored south, not east or west. This will alleviate the algae bloom problem and also provide a freshwater source for our southern most counties.

The Muck Stops With You
Federal help has been denied. Other elected officials can express outrage, but you’re the one person who can get this done. You have the authority to redirect the water south. You have the money available from Amendment 1 to buy the land necessary to store water south of Lake O. Our quality of life and Florida’s reputation depend on your decision.

All That’s Needed Is Political Will
The Guardians of Martin County demand that you step up. Stop dodging the real issue just to protect a special interest group. Make the “water fix” the first step in the “water solution”. Spend Amendment 1 money as voters intended. Accelerate the Everglades Restoration project. Make the water clean for good.
