All Aboard Florida has said it will include a positive-train-control system along its corridor, but details remain unclear, even as progress with the new technology is made by other passenger and freight railroads.

Positive train control is a system used by railroads that combines command, control, communications, and information systems to control train movement and increase safety, in particular by reducing the risk of train-to-train collisions and over-speed derailments.

The Federal Railroad Administration — which has called positive train control the “single-most important rail-safety development in more than a century” — emphasizes that the system prevents incidents caused by human error.

All Aboard Florida did not respond to a request for comment for this story.
